Cultural note from the author:
In Japan, the 3rd of March is a special day for girls. Families display hina dolls and decorations to wish for their daughters’ health and happiness. The tradition of tsurushibina began during the Edo period (1603–1868). Wealthy families could afford elaborate Hina doll displays, but many farming and rural families could not. Instead, mothers and grandmothers lovingly created handmade hanging decorations for their daughters and granddaughters. Each decoration was carefully stitched by hand and carried wishes for a child’s health, happiness, and bright future. Today, tsurushibina can be found in many beautiful styles throughout Japan.
