💜 A Note from Mariko Sensei

Growing up in Japan, beautiful packaging was part of everyday life. Gifts and souvenirs were often carefully wrapped because presentation was an important way of showing care and respect.

When studying environmental issues, learners may hear about Japan’s heavy use of plastic and packaging. But I wanted to show another side of the story too.

What is less often seen is how carefully rubbish is sorted and recycled in ordinary Japanese homes. Families separate different materials, wash and dry containers, and follow detailed local collection rules.

I created this reader because I wanted learners of Japanese to see both sides—the environmental challenges Japan faces, but also the everyday efforts people make to recycle and reduce waste.

One special photograph, showing rubbish being sorted by hand, was kindly provided with permission by Ogaki City in Gifu Prefecture. I am very grateful for their support, as this image helps students see a real part of Japan’s recycling process.

I hope this reader encourages learners to explore Japan’s environmental practices from a broader perspective.
