This levelled Japanese reader introduces basic Japanese vocabulary through Yukkuri-kun and Hayai-kun as they help learners tell the time in Japanese. It is suitable for primary students, beginner Japanese learners, and early reading practice.
Students develop basic vocabulary, simple sentence patterns, and reading confidence while learning to read clocks and talk about daily routines. Key language structures include 「なんじですか」, 「~じです」, and 「~のじかんです」.
The story helps learners connect time expressions with familiar daily activities such as breakfast, lunch, and snack time.
Cultural note from the author:
When I was a child, one of my favourite times of the day was three o’clock. In Japan, three o’clock is traditionally snack time, especially for children. My mum and grandma often told me, “Wait until three o’clock.”
Sometimes it felt as though the clock was moving very slowly while I waited for my treat. However, when three o’clock finally arrived, it seemed to come so quickly! Like Yukkuri-kun and Hayai-kun in this story, time can sometimes feel slow and fast at the same time.
