💜 A Note from Mariko Sensei

The beautiful winter photographs in Snow World were taken by my mother, Mitsuko Tashiro, during her travels in Hokkaido.

I was fascinated by the magical atmosphere captured in her photographs.

From glowing candles and delicate snow decorations to enormous snow sculptures, I was amazed by the beautiful things people could create using snow and ice.

I especially love the peaceful atmosphere of Otaru’s Snow Light Path, where candlelight creates a magical winter scene.

Nearby Sapporo is also famous for its spectacular snow sculptures.

I wanted to share this beautiful side of Japan with Japanese learners, using authentic photographs to help them understand natural, descriptive Japanese.

The friendly snowman brings a little imagination into the journey, introducing conversational expressions while guiding readers through Hokkaido’s winter world.

I hope students enjoy discovering these wonderful winter traditions and feel inspired to explore more of Japan through reading.

Most importantly, I hope they experience the joy of understanding Japanese for themselves.
