This levelled Japanese reader introduces basic Japanese vocabulary through the daily life of Chibi, a pet cat living in a bilingual English–Japanese home. It is suitable for primary students, beginner Japanese learners, and early reading practice.
Students develop basic vocabulary, simple sentence patterns, and reading confidence while following Chibi’s daily routine through real-life photographs. Key language structures include ~ます and ~がすきです.
The story introduces common pet-related vocabulary and everyday actions, helping learners connect the Japanese language with familiar daily experiences.
Cultural note from the author:
In Japan, maneki neko (beckoning cats) are believed to bring good luck and are often displayed in shops, restaurants, and other businesses. They are one of Japan’s most popular and recognisable lucky charms.
Although Chibi is not a maneki neko, he has brought a great deal of happiness to our family. Born in Brisbane and adopted into an English–Japanese bilingual home, Chibi understands both English and Japanese. This story follows a typical day in his life.
