Cultural note from the author:

The importance of the extended family, particularly grandparents, has traditionally been of great significance in Japanese society. Although this importance may be declining slightly, it still exists today. Since the day I was born, my grandma has lived with us, and she was always a significant part of my life. When I was a child, I used to say that my grandma was the most important person in the world, as I believed that my mother’s time would come naturally after my grandma.
