This levelled Japanese reader introduces basic Japanese vocabulary through the traditional Japanese word game, Shiritori. It is suitable for primary students, beginner Japanese learners, and early reading practice.

Cultural note from the author:

Shiritori is a traditional Japanese word game enjoyed by people of all ages, especially children. The name comes from the phrase 尻を取る (shiri o toru), which literally means “take the rear.” This refers to the basic rule of the game.

One player starts by saying a word, and the next player must use the final syllable of that word to begin a new one. The game continues until someone says a word ending in 「ん」 (n), which cannot be followed by another Japanese word. That player loses the game.
